About

The first (annual) Mozell Banks Thomas (MBT) Family Reunion Scholarship Fund awards was awarded/presented in 2018. History

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Past Winners

Jalen Carlyle

2018-2019 academic year recipient

My ultimate career aspiration and goal is to become a public or commercial architect. I will develop, design, and supervise the construction of public buildings such as shopping malls, libraries, government facilities, and homes. Although reaching my goal will bring self-satisfaction, it will also help others fulfill their dreams after I am able to create what they have envisioned. Being raised in two homes since I was 2 years old, with two educated parents, has also helped shape my life. While I feel that I am blessed in many ways, I also know that “giving back” and helping others is extremely important. As a member of Kappa League Mentoring Group for 3 years (under Kappa Alpha Psi/Stockbridge Jonesboro Chapter), I have participated in numerous of community service activities; including AIDS Walk, Relay for Life, educating others about childhood cancer (ALEKS Lemonade Stand), and tutoring and mentoring younger students. Additionally, I have helped students at a music camp during the summer, Hoops for Scholarships (basketball tournament), Strikes for Scholarships (bowling tournament), passed out coats t the homeless, served food to the hungry, and worked with other scholars (male and female) to promote excellence and school pride to all. I have even tutored older adults in college, as I was also a dual enrollment student at Clayton State University, earning 25 college hours. Oftentimes the older adults did not understand specific concepts and I would come in early or stay later and help them with math problems or labs. I also served as a mentor for the middle school students at Eagles Landing Middle School. In high school, I also participated in extracurricular activities and was recognized for many awards.

Essence Mozell Hunter

2019-2020 academic year recipient

I’m Essence Hunter, and I’ve had a variety of work experiences. On one end, I have 3+ years of experience in the food industry/guest services, and on the other, I have professional experience completing housing contracts as a real estate transaction coordinator. My senior year of college, I was a full-time student at Fort Valley State University. I was the first student at my high school to dual enroll at Fort Valley State University. I took four classes per semester and maintained a 4.0 grade point average. During this time, I worked two jobs, was a football and basketball cheerleader, and was a member of the national Spanish honors society. I volunteer whenever I can to make the world a better place. I also travel whenever I can. I spent three weeks studying abroad in Spain this summer, and I intend to continue traveling and volunteering as I finish my bachelor’s degree and apply to medical school.
